Monsignor Joseph Zarb: The Scholar-Priest of Żabbar
Monsignor Joseph Zarb (1912–1985) remains one of Malta’s most distinguished ecclesiastical figures, primarily celebrated for his transformative thirty-two-year tenure as the Parish Priest of Żabbar. Born on 9 December 1912 and ordained in 1937, he assumed leadership of the parish in 1943, navigating the community in the aftermath of the second world war.
A scholar of immense dedication, Fr. Zarb was the primary catalyst for the cultural and spiritual renaissance of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Graces. His most significant contribution to Maltese heritage was the inauguration of the Żabbar Sanctuary Museum in 1954. This institution, which he meticulously organised, serves as a repository for an extraordinary collection of ex-voto paintings reflecting the deep seafaring traditions of the local population and the intercessory presence of Our Lady of Graces.
Beyond his academic pursuits, Zarb was a formidable administrator. He successfully campaigned for the Canonical Coronation of the sanctuary’s titular painting in 1951—a landmark event in the island’s religious calendar. In 1975, his expertise led to his appointment as the Archpriest of the Mdina Cathedral, where he served until his death on 27 February 1985. His legacy is defined by a rare synthesis of profound pastoral care and a steadfast commitment to historical preservation.
